What Is a Migraine? A migraine is a painful headache with neurological features. It most likely has a genetic component and tends to affect women more than men. Migraines can be debilitating for many people. Many headaches can last several days at a time. Migraines can occur with an aura, which precedes the headache or occurs almost simultaneously, and includes neurological symptoms like flashing lights.
How Do Migraines Differ From Other Headaches? The biggest difference between migraines and other kinds of headaches is neurological symptoms. Patients with migraines may have visual disturbances like flashing lights, blurred vision, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. Migraines are often accompanied by nausea and vomiting. People with migraines may also develop dizziness, numbness, and weakness of the face or extremities, or (rarely) temporary paralysis.
How Are Migraines Treated? One key is to identify -triggers” that can start the cascade of physiological changes and then avoid the trggers or change lifestyle habits that may contribute. Some well-known triggers are stress, alcohol, sleep deprivation, hormonal changes in women, chocolate, and other foods. Often times headaches and migraines are mechanical in nature, and can be relieved and prevented with movement. Other possible treatments acupuncture, and chiropractic adjustments.
How Can Chiropractic Help Migraines? Numerous studies have shown upper cervical manipulation performed by an experienced chiropractor can reduce the duration and severity of a migraine, especially when performed at the onset of symptoms. Movement therapy is another chiropractic tool that has been proven beneficial in preventing and treating migraine headaches.
