Pregnancy Care Q&A

What Is Chiropractic Pregnancy Care?  In addition to other changes that occur during pregnancy, a woman’s gait and posture changes in response to the increasing size of the abdomen. This causes stress on the musculoskeletal system as the woman’s center of gravity changes and she compensates for the changes. Hormones also affect the musculoskeletal system. These changes typically result in back pain that can’t be treated with pain medications and other conventional western treatments. Chiropractic treatment helps relieve pain associated with pregnancy.

Why Do I Need Chiropractic Pregnancy Care? Pelvic ligaments gradually loosen as the pregnancy progresses. This is normal and helps the pelvis stretch during delivery, but it also affects the Mother’s gait, posture and musculature balance. The protruding abdomen increases forces on the low back and may cause pain. Chiropractic can help make a woman more comfortable as her body changes. Specific, gentle Chiropractic adjustments during pregnancy also encourages the baby into the proper position for delivery. The success rate is extremely high and this technique is very safe for mother and baby!

Is Special Training Required? Chiropractors learn about pregnancy care during their time in school, but special training is required to be certified in additional techniques. The post-graduate training may include acupuncture techniques, Webster technique and other nutritional and supplement counseling techniques.  Webster-certified chiropractors have been trained specifically in working with pelvic balance during pregnancy. The training also includes exercises and stretches that are taught to the patient to make her more comfortable and promote an easier delivery. Dr. Kiper obtained his Webster Certification through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) in 2016.

What Are the Benefits of Chiropractic Pregnancy Care? Chiropractic is very helpful throughout the entire pregnancy. Correcting spinal problems help reduce the nausea of morning sickness by promoting better nervous system function. Keeping a balanced state in the pelvis helps prevent breached births (the baby is born feet first). Of course, chiropractic can also help relieve neck, back, or joint pain. In addition to hands-on treatment, the Doctor will teach patients specific movement-based therapies and home exercises to promote an easier delivery.
